Lunches at the Town Square library

By Kevin Tolley

Town Square library is proving free lunches every week day to children aged 0-18. Every day from 12pm to 12:30pm kids can come and receive free lunches that are provided through a partnership with Vacaville Unified School District.

Lunches at the Library keeps children and teens nourished during the summer months, helping to ensure that they return to school in the fall ready to learn.

For many children and teens across the country and in Vacaville, the stability and nutrition provided by the lunches they receive in the school cafeteria, and the learning opportunities they receive in the classroom, end when school lets out for summer vacation.

Combined with the annual Summer Reading Challenge, our summer meal program helps combat hunger and learning loss during the summer by providing children and teens with regularly-scheduled, free and healthy meals through the USDA Summer Food Service Program, learning and enrichment programs, and essential library services and resources.

The Summer Reading Challenge is simply a way to encourage kids to read. We give away prize books that kids can keep for reading during the summer. So, not only do the kids get free food, they also can receive prizes for reading. This is the perfect combination and is all within the library — a trusted space at the heart of the community.
