Solano County Library is partnering with other California libraries to provide a new way to read e-books, without limitations, reservations or expirations.  The service, called Total BooX, is providing partner libraries a free trial that will end in February.   “Adding Total BooX to our other e-book collections is a way to give our customers even more options for reading on mobile devices,” said Bonnie Katz, Director of Library Services.

“We want to make it as easy as possible for our customers to get the books they need, whether they are reading for pleasure, working on a project or learning a new skill, ” said Katz.

Total BooX gives library customers a new digital reading experience, with no waiting lines, expirations or limitations on the number of books on a customer’s device.  Over 50,000 titles are always available for instant download. Reading on tablets and phones can be done online and offline, while the library is charged only for the pages read.

If Solano County Library adopts the new service, library customers get Total BooX for free, just as they do other library materials.  For libraries, the Total BooX pricing model is a departure from the way publishers have controlled e-books in the past.  Traditional models restrict the way libraries can buy e-books; some allow an e-book to be borrowed 26 times before a new one must be purchased, other e-books are offered as a one-year license.  Total BooX charges libraries based on the number of pages accessed by a library customer. This is particularly cost-effective for libraries in the case of “how-to” and other non-fiction, where users read only the pages that are most relevant to the task at hand.  “We know e-books are popular in our community – we saw a 36% jump in e-book borrowing last year. We hope that the community will give Total BooX a try between now and the end of February and tell us what they think,” said Katz.
