In celebration of African American Heritage Month, the Fairfield Civic Center Library, 1150 Kentucky St., will host a presentation by local historian and author Sharon McGriff-Payne on her new book about the life and times of 19th century orator and lawyer, Thomas Pearson on Saturday, February 18, 10:30 - 11:30 AM.

Pearson was raised in Vallejo and was one of the important Bay Area African American orators of his time. Pearson ran for state assembly in Alameda County 1896 and in 1905 became the first African American lawyer in California to be admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court in San Francisco.

Pearson’s intriguing life story chronicles not only African American family life in the North Bay in the 19th century, it also explores the most pressing issues of that period, including slavery, African American suffrage and equal rights.
