Solano County Library Digital Microfilm Collection
Solano County Library now has a large library of local news publications that have been digitized for your convenience!
Which city’s news publications are included in the collection?
Our collection of digital microfilm includes publications from all over Solano County. From larger cities like Fairfield, Vallejo, and Vacaville, to smaller towns like Rio Vista and Dixon.
How do I access these documents?
This collection can only be accessed from a Solano County Library branch. It is accessible from any of our public computers.
What’s the benefit of digital microfilm vs. physical?
Digital microfilm allows you to search for keywords/names within various publications. This allows you to quickly find what you’re looking for. With physical microfilm, you might have to scroll through years of microfilm to find what you’re looking for.
The collection can be accessed by multiple people at the same time. With physical microfilm, only one person could browse through a reel.
Physical microfilm required special equipment to view images. Our new digital collection can be viewed with any Solano County Library public computer.
Who can access the Digital Microfilm collection?
Anyone!

Databases vs. Web
A primary difference between databases and websites is that librarians review and select the databases which have book, magazine, journal, and even Web information that is considered reliable, authoritative, historically relevant, and valuable. Most information on the web does not go through a review process. Most of the information available through a database also is available in a paper format but by providing the information in an electronic format, the library can save money by buying one electronic subscription which can be shared by many people.
For your research, you will probably save yourself time and find more quality information if you begin with library resources and then move to the Web if you need more information or other points of view. Remember, when using remote access to get to the library's databases, you are accessing the library's collection via the Web, but are still using library resources which tend to be more reliable.
