Book: Eliza and Her Monsters
Author: Francesca Zappia
Reviewer: Jennifer, 8th Grade
Eliza Mirk, or LadyConstellation online, was an eighteen-year-old anonymous creator of Monstrous Sea, a popular webcomic. She loved her digital community of fans, monitoring chat forums, and working on art pages. Her parents and brothers did not understand the creativity and work she put into the success of the webcomic. When Wallace transferred to her high school, her life drastically changed. Their relationship started slow, using paper and pen to communicate, but they connected through interests and feelings. While there were lots of geeky fandom aspects, fanfiction, fanart, and cosplay, the story of Eliza’s anxiety and relationships with those around her gave the noel a more serious and emotional incline. It was surprising, entertaining, and unpredictable to read because of the different types of formatting: text messages, illustrations, fragments of Eliza’s webcomic, and profiles. I would rate this book five stars because it was a great work of contemporary literature.
