THE HATE U GIVE book review by Zara Jackson

Book: The Hate U Give

Author: Angie Thomas

Reviewer: Zara Jackson, 9th Grade

Starr Carter is a 16-year-old black teenager who has had to go through immense trauma and pressure because of the things she’s witnessed. When she was 10, her best friend was killed in an act of police brutality. When she was 16, she thought it’d never happen again. She was wrong. Starr and her family pushed for attention, and The Hate U Give is her story on how she wanted justice for her deceased friends.

As a black woman herself, Angie Thomas knows about the struggles of racism in today’s society. Her coming-of-age novel is a wonderful story that reflects her own experiences in living her life. She wrote a story full of all the uncomfortable things in life, the things that nobody wants to talk about. The things that need attention. The emotions carried throughout the characters are beautifully executed, and although the story is fictional, the experiences are not. Starr Carter’s feelings are so descriptive and the use of imagery in the book brings it to another level. This book is perfect for any teenager as it isn’t too long and has a story that everyone should read: learning about how racism can affect anyone.
