Update on the Wi-Fi Hotspot Lending Program

Update on the Library’s Hotspot Lending Program

We know many of you rely on our Wi-Fi hotspot lending program, and we’re grateful for how much the community has embraced it. Unfortunately, the federal funding that makes this program possible will end in December 2025.

Because of this, we will need to cancel all hotspot hold requests starting September 23, 2025. We’re very sorry for the inconvenience this may cause and understand how disappointing this news is.

The Library is exploring ways to keep a smaller hotspot program available in the new year, and we are hopeful that we’ll be able to continue offering this service in some form.

Thank you for supporting your Library.

FAQS

Why was my hotspot hold cancelled?
The hotspot program was funded through federal support, which ends in December 2025. Because of this, we need to collect the hotspots and cancel holds starting September 23. We know this is disappointing, and we’re sorry for the inconvenience.

Are hotspots going away forever?
No. The Library is planning to relaunch a smaller hotspot program in early 2026. It will be a reduced version, but this will help us keep the service sustainable.

How many hotspots will be available in the new program?
We expect there will be about 70 hotspots in the new program, though the final number has not been set yet.

Who will be able to borrow hotspots in the new program?
We are still finalizing the details. The plan is to lend hotspots to patrons with the greatest need, likely with the support of a community agency. We’ll share more information once it is decided.

Why can’t the Library keep the program the same size as before?
Running the program at its current scale is very expensive. With federal funding ending, the Library cannot support it on its own. That’s why we are focusing on a smaller, more sustainable version that we hope can last longer.

I’m really disappointed—this program helped me a lot.
We understand this is frustrating. The hotspot program has been a valuable resource, and we’re doing our best to keep it going in a way that can continue serving the community members who rely on it.
