About the Summer Reading Challenge

Registration: June 1 – July 31, 2024
Beginning June 1, stop by your local library to sign up and pick up an activity sheet.

Who Can Join: All ages

How It Works:

Readers: Track reading minutes on an activity sheet.

Non-readers: Track fun activities on an activity sheet.

Prizes:

Children: Free book at registration; second book, tote bag, and Sacramento River Cats ticket after completing the activity sheet.

Teens: Free book, tote bag, and Sacramento River Cats ticket after completing the activity sheet. Teens will be able to select an in-stock book of their choice from Amazon with a $15 max limit. 

Adults: Enamel pin, tote bag, and Sacramento River Cats ticket after completing the activity sheet.

Extras:

Automatic entry into weekly drawings for Oakland A’s. San Francisco Giants tickets, and ferry passes.

Prizes must be picked up at a Solano County Library branch (no mail delivery).

Book prizes provided by the Solano County Library Foundation, Scholastic, and Penguin Books.

SUMMER READING EVENTS

  • June 6: Summer Reading Kickoff Party (10AM – 12PM)  – Sign up for our Summer Reading program and enjoy a bubble show from Pixie Tribe, face painting, popsicles, and more!
  • June 13: Karina’s Family Farm Day (10AM) – Come out and pet animals from Karina’s Family Farm! Play in our mud pools and craft a cute paper animal to take home!
  • July 20: Bri’s Silly Circus Show – Bri’s Silly Circus Show uses juggling, outrageous jokes, and her sleight-of-hand tricks that keep you guessing, “how did she do that?!”
  • June 27: Wild Things  Animal Show (10AM) – Enjoy learning about the amazing animals around the world! Meet new animal friends brought to us by Conservation Ambassadors!
  • July 11: Bohart Museum of Entomology – Come out and meet cute, creepy and crawly bug friends!
  • July 18: California Raptor Center (10AM) – Explore and learn about California friends that fly in the skies! Touch the bones and feathers of these amazing creatures an learn from the experts at the California Raptor Center of UC Davis.
  • July 25: Cello Joe (10AM) – Experience the unique musical talents of Cello Joe, a beatboxing cellist. His style of classical hip-hop can’t be missed!

Family Events

  • June 18: Village Rhythms (3PM-4PM) – An interactive event with African drumming, dance, songs and stories presented by Master percussionist Onye Onyemaechi
  • June 20: Charged Particles Family Jazz Performance (3PM-4PM) – Charged Particles features three of the country’s virtuosos doing just that in the acoustic and electric jazz arena. The trio’s funky Latin jazz repertoire, blending in elements of classical music, mixes complex orchestration with freewheeling improvisation.
  • June 21: Jungle James – Reptile Show (3PM-4PM) – Families can join us to meet reptiles from around the world! Reptiles will be brought to us by Jungle James, LLC, which aims to inspire a lifelong appreciation for wildlife and the environment. 
  • June 25: Coventry & Kaluza(3-4PM) – Award-winning circus comedians, Coventry & Kaluza bring a variety of skills and thrills to their show, which features juggling, acrobatics, music, comedy and high numbers hula hooping. It’s interactive fun for the whole family!
  • June 26: Family Summer Movies (3PM-5PM) – Free family-friendly movie screening at the library!
  • July 2: Mariela’s Bilingual Music Time (3PM-4PM) – Mariela’s Music Time is an educational, energetic and interactive bilingual (English/Spanish) performance for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers and their families!
  • July 16: Summer Salads (3PM-4PM) – Kids can join Public Health Nutritionist Catherine Park and learn about nutrition and create their own salads with fresh produce.
  • July 19: Kaululehua Hawaiian Cultural Center Performance (3PM-4PM) – Enjoy the tradition of Hula dance from Hawai’i!
  • July 25: Rock Steady Juggling (3PM-4PM) -Rock Steady Juggling will entertain with a family “eco-tainment” show that features comedy, magic, juggling, and audience participation while teaching practical tips on water conservation and protecting the environment.
  • July 30: Conservation Ambassadors – Wild Animal Show (3-4PM) – Join us for a visit from a variety of wild animals! Learn about them, see them up close, and even get a chance to pet some of them! 
  • July 31: Family Summer Movies (3PM-5PM) – Free family-friendly movie screening at the library!

Teen Events

  • June 11: Teen Manga Cafe (4-5PM) – An afternoon full of manga, Japanese snacks, anime puzzles and anime music!
  • July 23: Teen Paint Night with Ms. Rhea (4-5PM) – Learn to paint a work of art! Materials provided. Registration Required.

Family Events

  • June 1: Trucks of the Trade (9AM – 12PM) – Come see different types of vehicles and meet the people who drive them!
  • June 8: Build It Day! (10:30AM – 11:30AM) – Free build with our Legos, Duplos, Mega Bloks and Lincoln Logs!
  • June 13: Messy Art Day (10:30AM – 11:30AM) – Join us for fun art projects! Come dressed to get messy and have fun.
  • June 20: Conservation Ambassadors – Wild Animal Show (2 SHOWS – 10AM & 11AM) Advanced tickets required for this event. Tickets available starting June 1st. – Meet and learn about amazing animals from around the world!
  • June 27: Eat The Rainbow (10:30AM-11:30AM) – Tasty fruits and delicious stories!
  • July 11: Bluey Day (10:30AM – 11:30AM) – Activities and crafts inspired by Bluey!
  • July 13: Anime Cafe For Kids (2:30PM – 4PM) Watch family friendly anime, make crafts, have some snacks, and share your favorite manga books! Dress in cosplay, bring your favorite anime plushie, book or item to talk about with others.
  • July 18: Taiko Drumming with Kristy Oshiro (10AM) – Japanese language, culture, and history combine into an exciting experience! You may even get to play the drums yourself!
  • July 25: Bubble Day (10:30AM – 11:30AM) – Join us for bubble fun!

Teen Events

  • June 11: Ice Cream Social (2PM) – Join us at the library for ice cream and fun with music and friends!
  • June 18: Teen Paint Day (2PM) – A Summer themed paint day with instructor Rhea! Registration is required for this event.
  • June 20: Teen Anime Cafe (5PM – 6:30PM) – Come to the library to watch anime, discuss manga and eat Japanese snacks!

Adult Events

  • June 4: Jams and Jellies with the Master Preservers (6PM)–  Learn how to make and process Jams & Jellies with Master Preservers!
  • June 15: Puzzle Exchange (2PM)– Drop off your puzzles at the library the week before the event. Get tickets to trade for new-to-you puzzles at the exchange!
  • July 9: Reiki Guided Meditation & Sound Healing (6:30PM): Destress with a relaxing guided meditation infused with Reiki healing energy and sound healing.
  • July 20: Persian Dance Performance (2PM)
  • July 30: Mixing Mocktails (6:30PM)
  • June 12: Cello Joe (1PM – 2PM) – Enjoy a Summer Reading Performance by the Wildest Celloist in the west!
  • June 19: Reptile Rescue – Reptile Show (10:30AM – 11:30AM) – JnW Reptile Rescue’s will be bringing reptiles for you to look at and some for you to pet! Bring the whole family to enjoy lizards, snakes, and turtles, oh my!
  • June 26: Rock Steady Juggling (10AM – 11AM) -Doug from Rock Steady Juggling is coming back to Rio Vista Library to entertain and delight! Come to laugh and enjoy his antics and perhaps even be a volunteer?
  • July 10: Jeremy The Juggler (10AM – 11AM) – A juggle performance followed by an origami workshop!
  • July 17: All About A Farm Petting Zoo (10:30AM) – Farm animal petting zoo!

All Suisun City Library Summer Reading Events will be on Tuesdays @10AM (With the exception of the Friday, June 14 JNW Reptiles program).

  • June 28: Outdoor Fun Day (10AM – 12PM) – Fun outdoor games, crafts and frozen treats!
  • July 5: Bubble Lady (10:30AM) – Big bubbles! Small Bubbles! Kids inside of bubbles! This is sure to be a bubbletastic good time!
  • July 12: CMC Reptiles (10AM-12PM) – Get up-close and hands on with some cool reptiles. Drop in anytime between 10AM – 12PM for this reptile petting zoo.
  • July 19: Live Animals with Wildmind ( 2 SHOWS – 10:30AM & 12:30PM) – Get an up close look at some wild critters and learn all about them.
  • July 26: Puppet Art Theater Presents: Goldilocks and the Three Sharks (10:30AM) – Go on an adventure to the bottom of the sea in this new version of a classic fairy tale. This fun show uses black light and will be in a darkened room.
  • August 2: Mike the Magician (10:30AM) – This amazing and interactive show will have families laughing out loud!

Family Events

  • June 12: Games Day (1PM)– Come to the library for games, Legos, STEM activities and fun!
  • June 19: WildMind Animal Show (1PM) – WildMind will be bringing animals to the library! You might recognize some of them!
  • June 26: Painting Program (1PM)– Join us at the library for a fun painting event!
  • July 10: Magic Dan (1PM)– Join us for an amazing (and silly) magic show, and lots of laughs.
  • July 17: Park Ranger Anne (1PM) – Park Ranger Anne will teach us about Mare Island and ship history. We will walk down to the ferry building to see history in-person!
  • July 24: Mad Science Fun Stations (1PM) – Join Mad Science for two fun-filled, educational stations! Both offer take-home prizes!
  • July 31: Reptiles in the Library! (2PM) – Reptiles friends will be at the library. This will be a hands-on event (if you want it to be)!

Teen Events

  • June 15: Henna with Rachel (2PM) – Get a temporary tattoo to show off for Summer! (Limit 25 teens)
  • August 2: Dali Clocks (2PM) – Make a Salvador Dali inspired clock out of clay!
  • July 13: Laser Tag (2PM-4PM) – Play Capture the Flag in teams!
  • July 20: STEM for Tweens (2PM-3:30PM) – Egg drop challenge for tweens!
  • July 27: Fun & Games (2PM-4PM) – Giant Jenga, cornhole and more!

Vallejo Springstowne Library Summer Events will take place Fridays at 10:00AM
