2021 Solano County Library Teen Writing Contest

September 6 to October 29, 2021   


Submit your best written work for a chance to win prizes and publication.

Eligibility: Any teen who is between the ages of 12 and 18 and is a Solano County resident.

Contest Period: Submit entries September 6th-October 29th at 11:59pm Pacific Standard Time.

Prizes: 3 winning entries from each category will be published. Each winner will also receive a $25 gift card. In addition, each winner will receive copies of Find Your Voice: A Guided Journal for Writing Your Truth by Angie Thomas and Don’t Turn Out the Lights: A Tribute to Alvin Schwartz’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark edited by Jonathan Maberry. Extra prizes were made possible by an endowment from the Horror Writers Association.

How to Enter:

Short story, poetry and essay entries will be accepted by email only. Email them to Please include in your email your name, age, city, your writing category, and the name of the Solano County Library branch you use most frequently. If you are choosing the essay category, be sure to tell us which prompt you chose for your essay.

Contest Rules:

You may submit to more than one category and may submit only one entry per category. All entries must follow the specified rules for each category. Each winner will be limited to winning in only one category.

Short stories

  1. Can be up to 1250 words long
  2. No illustrations or drawings allowed in this category.
  3. Must be typed and submitted online.


  1. Can be up to 2 pages in length.
  2. Can be in any form (sonnet, ode, haiku etc.)
  3. No drawings or illustrations allowed in this category.
  4. Work must be typed and submitted online.


Must choose one of the three prompts listed below.

  • Prompt one: How did the COVID-19 pandemic affect you? Was it a positive or negative experience or both? What did you learn about yourself as a result?
  • Prompt two: When have you seen yourself and your life reflected in a book or other media? Write about that experience and why it was important.
  • Prompt three: Write about an experience that made you into the person you are today. Be sure to talk about who you were before this event, and how you have changed since.
  1. Must be no more than 500 words long.
  2. No drawings or illustrations allowed in this category.
  3. Work must be typed and submitted online.

Works must be creative, original and unpublished. Judges from the community shall choose the winners from all entrants who have submitted an entry during the submission period. Winners shall be chosen based upon creativity, originality, style, grammar and spelling. The decision of the judges is final. Prize winners will be notified after December 17, 2021.

Library Use of Entries:

By entering your work, you acknowledge that Solano County Library shall have the right to use, modify, reproduce, publish, display, distribute, and make derivative works of Entry Materials for promotional or any other purposes.

Original Work:

You hereby warrant and represent that (a) you own all rights to all Entry Materials submitted by you; and (b) all such Entry Materials are original works of authorship on your part and have not been copied, in whole or in part, from any other work and do not violate, misappropriate or infringe any copyright, trademark or other proprietary right of any other person or entity.
